You may wish to write down good DoG moments, whether you received or offered the Dose, to help you gain a better understanding of how the Dose of God impacted your life.
First, identify an occurrence in your life in which you received or offered a Dose of God. Whether the dose was seemingly small or large, any Dose of God that you can identify will work just fine for the purposes of this exercise. Next, ask yourself some questions about the DoG you selected. You may choose to answer the questions presented in the “ABC’s of a Good DoG” poem, any of the following questions, or a composition of your own questions to help you document the experience.
- What time of day did it occur?
- Where were you?
- Who was with you?
- What did the dose sound like?
- What did it look like?
- How did it make you feel?
- Did your worries disappear?
- Did your perceptions change?
- What did you learn?
- Did it humble you?
- Did it empower you?
- Did it strengthen your soul?
Make it a routine practice to identify good DoGs in your life and pay attention to how they impacted you and those around you. Maintaining a “Good DoG Journal” will help you learn more about when, where, and how you allow a good Dose of God to impact your life or the life of another. Keeping a good DoG journal is much the same as a person documenting his or her medication intake or exercise routine to know when, where, and how the medicine was administered or the exercise was performed.
Your journal will help you develop an awareness of the types of circumstances that exist when you are most prone to allow a Dose of God into your soul or to offer a Dose of God to another. You may also begin to identify situations in your life where your soul would benefit from more frequent Doses of God. Continued documentation of DoG experiences will empower you to realize that a Dose of God is always available, from your brightest moment do your darkest hour. You will know with all your heart that you can offer a Dose of God under any circumstances if you simply allow enough presence in the moment to let God share His Word through you.
Whether you are receiving or giving Doses of God, you will learn which forms of good DoG administration work best for you. Perhaps the dose reaches you best through the voice of a friend, the image of a beautiful painting, the invigorating scent of fresh air, the hand of a significant other, or the flavor of your mother’s home cooked meal. Perhaps you offer a dose best through a kind hello to a stranger, a written message to a friend, the smell of flowers you grow in your garden, a hug you give to someone who needs comfort, or the flavor of coffee you brew for the office. Through good DoG reflection and documentation, you will be able to determine if you receive or offer a Dose of God most effectively through sound, sight, scent, touch, taste, or a combination of these.
As you begin to identify the moments that work best for you, allow yourself opportunities to experience more of those moments. And, also know with all of your heart that a DoG exists right here, right now, even if present circumstances won’t allow you to receive or offer the dose through your preferred means. Simply be still, be present, and open your soul. At this very moment, a good DoG is here for you. Let it work for you. Let it work through you. Allow it to strengthen you and those in your presence.
A good DoG truly is your best friend. Use the DoG that is here for you now!
